Yarm 1914

Died of wounds 24 Feb 1917 aged 20. Son of Godfrey Watson a motorman of Church Wynd and later 6 Carlton Terrace, Yarm and Elizabeth Ann his wife; brother of John Charles (see on). He had been born at Galphay near Ripon and according to Soldiers Died enlisted in Stockton while living in Yarmouth. He is not on Yarmouth’s Roll and this is probably an error for Yarm. Yarm1914 believe that James William was born in 1897 in Galphay near Ripon to Godfrey Watson aged 32, a shoemaker and his wife Elizabeth Ann (nee Croft) aged 37. He had two sisters Mary Jane aged 6 and Margaret aged 4 and a brother John Charles aged 2. By 1901 they had moved to 14 Craister Street in the Tilery/Norton district where Godfrey was a general labourer. By 1911 Mary Jane and Margaret were not living with the family, which had moved to Church Wynd in Yarm. Godfrey was a wagon driver and John Charles a lamp lighter before signing up in 1914 and joining the 1/4 Yorkshire regiment. John Charles was killed whilst on duty on as a look-out 1 Sep 1915.
